A toddler had to have a liver transplant after being struck down by the mysterious wave of hepatitis that has infected at least 110 American children and killed five. Two year-old Baelyn Schwab, from Aberdeen in South Dakota, initially fell ill on April 22 with hives, and ended up having a transplant just a fortnight later, on May 5. The youngster suffers from allergies, so her mom Kelsea wasn't overly concerned when she first spotted the welts last month. But Kelsea, who lost her baby daughter Laramie to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in December 2021, took Baelyn to their local emergency room anyway to be safe. The toddler was sent home with allergy medication, but woke up with yellow eyes the next morning. Her condition rapidly deteriorated after she was brought back to hospital by her mom the next day. Recalling what the doctors said after doing a blood draw, Kelsea, who also has an older daughter, told CNN : 'Couple of hours later they said you need to get to the hospital now and we're going to fly you there.' Kelsea says the news was additionally distressing in the wake of Laramie's death, which came just 12 days before the infant had been due to turn one. She runs a farm with her husband, who doesn't want to be named, and said of Baelyn's illness:  'I think I've cried so much in the last five months, I don't have any tears left. Baelyn received a liver from a 16 year-old donor from Texas. Doctors remain mystified as to why the little girl fell ill with hepatitis, which has infected at least 110 American youngsters in recent weeks, most of whom are under five. They found adenovirus in Baelyn's blood, which has been pinpointed as a possible cause, but no traces in her liver. Baelyn and her family also caught COVID in December last year, with doctors probing whether that virus may be linked to the hepatitis outbreaks.

A Wisconsin school district lodged a Title IX complaint against three middle school students for using the wrong pronouns while addressing another student. Three Kiel Middle School students are being investigated for what the school has termed 'sexual assault' in connection to the incident. They include the Rosemary Rabidoux's eighth grader son, Bradon, 13, who is among those accused. Bradon's mother, Rosemary said that the district had taken things too far by filing such a complaint. 'The charge against students for sexual harassment is an extreme abuse of the Title IX process. It's totally inappropriate and is totally being mishandled by the school district,' said Luke Berg from the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL), who are now taking on the case and is defending the students, although they are urging for the case to be dismissed.

Long Island police have released three chilling secret-911 calls made by one of the victims linked to the notorious Gilgo Beach serial killer and claim that her 2010 death was as a result of a 'tragic accident'. At a news conference on Friday afternoon, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison released three 911 calls related to Shannan Gilbert's disappearance - one from her, and two others from homeowners in the area where she vanished. He called Shannan Gilbert's death a 'tragic accident'.  Gilbert has long been tied to the unsolved Gilgo Beach murders. In the search for her, police found the remains of four other women buried burlap sacks along a barren stretch of Ocean Beach Parkway. The four women would later be known as the 'Gilgo Beach Four'. All four victims had worked as escorts using Craigslist. Six more bodies, believed to be from unrelated cases, would be found months later.

Marvel is bringing two new transgender characters into their universe with the upcoming debut of Escapade aka Shela Sexton and her partner in fighting crime, Morgan Red in the company's Pride edition. NEW A 16-year-old high school student in rural Texas is dead after he was shot in the back as he and his family were terrorized by a pack of wild hogs. Dylan Seymour, who went by D-Ray, was hog hunting with his mother, Amy Blackwell, and brother, 19, on her husband's property in Trent, Texas, on the night of May 7 when the horror unfolded. Trent is located on the outskirts of the town of Abilene, Texas. Seymour was from Tolar, Texas, 50 miles south west of Fort Worth. The family were running from the hogs as the animals charged at them. As the charge ended, Seymour told his family: 'Stop, stop, I got shot.' It remains unclear if he shot himself, was shot by a family member, or a third party, but cops say they're treating the death as a tragic accident.

Fred Ward died on May 8 at the age of 79, his publicist announced. The former lumberjack and short-order cook got his start in acting after moving to Rome and working as a mime and a voice-over actor. His mime gig eventually led to a a few appearance on a TV shows by an Italian director Roberto Rossellini in 1973. The San Diego native went on to star in many well known movies like The Right Stuff in 1983 (bottom right) and Tremors in 1990 (top right). Ward appeared in over 70 Hollywood films and in dozens of TV shows. His last role was in 2015 as Eddie Velcoro for two episodes of the series True Detective with Matthew McConaughey. Throughout his life, he married three times and had a child Django - who is a musician - with his second wife.

On Wednesday, Zara Phythian, 37, pictured centre left and her husband Victor Marke (far left) were found guilty of grooming and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old schoolgirl. The first time it happened they got the teenager drunk on Captain Morgan rum, and Zara dared the child to perform a sex act on her husband. On subsequent occasions, Marke filmed the incidents in an 'attempt to recreate pornographic scenes' with the assaults progressing to include full sexual intercourse - said to have taken place on numerous occasions.

The 2020 Model S was reportedly travelling at 70mph down Route 315 when it took the Vine Street exit and spun out near the High Street intersection in Columbus, Ohio on May 4. Frightening surveillance footage of the lunchtime crash shows the vehicle plowing through the Greater Columbus Convention Center where a junior volleyball tournament was behind held. The driver told police he could not break after exiting the highway onto Vine Street where the speed limit is 30mph but witnesses gave a different account. Although it unclear if the driver was using autopilot, Tesla estimated only one crash per 4.31million miles on autopilot.

Appalling surveillance footage shows a pair of gunmen with assault rifles murder a man at a gas station in broad daylight. Brandon Dixon, 30, was targeted by two shooters with assault rifles as they drove up to the Liberty forecourt in east Mount Airy, north Philadelphia Monday. Surveillance footage shows the balaclava-clad men drive up to the gas station and watch Brandon pump gas into his car before leaping out with assault rifles. The Philly dad sprints away as they open fire, but didn't get away. He died with multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body. Brandon's mother Lisa Dixon, who is now looking after his daughter Jordan, 5, said: 'I feel like my heart has been snatched out of my body.'

As part of a new, popular TikTok trend, numerous former soldiers have shared stories of the abuse that they suffered while fighting for their country. Multiple women have spoken out about their choice to get abortions after being sexually assaulted in the military - in the wake of the Roe versus Wade ruling. One veteran said she was roofied and sexually assaulted by three services members, and was branded a 'baby killer' after ending the pregnancy. Another claimed she was raped by her supervisor, and was 'bullied by fellow soldiers' and 'retaliated against' by her superiors after she reported it. A third alleged that she was 'pinned down' and forced to have sex with a fellow soldier while at her first duty station. According to a 2018 study, women make up only 16.5 per cent of the armed services - and nearly one in four report experiencing sexual assault.

An independent autopsy requested by the family of Debanhi Escobar (inset) revealed she was beaten, raped, killed before she was dumped in a water tank at the Nueva Castilla Motel in Escobedo, Nuevo León. The report disputes the original medical report conducted by the Nuevo León Attorney General's Office and ehemently rejected by her father Mario Escobar. The 18-year-old met with two girlfriends, identified as Sarahī and Yvonne, for a night of partying on April 8 and was reported missing on April 9 after she failed to return home. Escobar's case has drawn international headlines because of a haunting photo (left) snapped by Juan David Cuellar, a rideshare app driver, that showed the law student standing on the side of a road, several blocks away from the motel. The teenager was also seen on surveillance video (right) arguing and being chased by a male individual who appears to hit her before she slapped and kicked him on the night she was killled.

Shamekia Morris, a fashion designer from West Palm Beach, Florida, first started putting temporary tattoos on her son Treylin when he was just six months old. A complete skeleton of a fearsome dinosaur that was depicted in a terrifying scene in Jurassic Park has sold for $12.4 million at a Christie's auction in New York. Standing at 4ft-tall and 10ft-long, the 110 million-year-old skeleton belongs to apex predator Deinonychus antirrhopus.

Newly discovered photographs of The Beatles pictured weeks before they were famous in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset - including a 'stolen' underwear sign - are set to fetch almost $13,000 at an upcoming auction in Bristol. The iconic collection of images were taken by superfan Sandra Woodruff back in 1963. She broke into the group's hotel room at The Royal Pier Hotel with her friends and snapped pictures with them and later picturing them on the beach with fans.
